Ward Kusters

An award-winning chef who aims to continuously innovate

After finishing his studies, chef Ward Kusters takes on a temporary dishwasher job. It is there that he meets his current partners, sommeliers Lieke Vos and Jeroen van Esch. While working as a dishwasher, he helps out in the kitchen and falls in love with the culinary profession. He decides to study at the Cas Spijkers cooking academy and apprentices at renowned restaurants and catering businesses. Chef Koen Somers of restaurant De Kristalijn teaches him more refined cooking techniques and chef Syrco Bakker of Pure C teaches him the essence of taste. Ward gets his confidence from them to start his own business, resulting in restaurant Hunker.

As a chef, I think it’s important to not repeat yourself and to keep innovating and experimenting.
