In a secluded and utterly romantic natural setting accompanied by the fantastic panoramas of Upper Styria, you will find this original restaurant with its spirited interior decor. Originally a farm, the Lurgbauer has long since become a pilgrimage destination for foodies – all the better, then, that this establishment also offers magical guestrooms with every comfort.

Sommelier: Maximilian Leodolter
In the kitchen, junior owner Maximilian Leodolter holds the reins, having previously refined his culinary craftsmanship at the Steirereck amongst other places. Beef specialties – newly interpreted with exciting and surprising accents – are the focal point. As an alternative, diners can also choose from a small-yet-exceptional selection of classic dishes as well as lovingly prepared vegetarian creations.
The wine menu is nicely structured, providing a list of the most important wineries and vintners in Austria. The selection consists exclusively of domestic lines, primarily white wines from Styria and Lower Austria along with reds from Burgenland, with several up-and-coming star producers just waiting to be discovered. These are supplemented by various fine juices: Pear and pear blends, naturally cloudy apple juice and other home-produced seasonal juices (raspberry, sour cherry, currant, etc.) along with homemade verjus provide for total refreshment.
5 rooms with every comfort are available at the farm – having been awarded the highest possible quality rating, “4 Flowers” –, one of which even boasts a sauna and bathtub with panoramic view. Yet another option for overnight guests is the “Lurgbauer Feldkasten” chalet, a 250-year-old recently revitalized building; featuring a sauna made from antique wood as well as a designer bathtub and more.
A small, exquisite shop offering its own products for guests to purchase and enjoy at home: homemade beef salami, liverwurst by the jar, various seasonal products such as elderberry liqueur in summer and a punch concentrate in winter, plus an enticing palette of homemade jams along with fruit spreads by Kar-Ma (“Karins Marmeladen”).
Amongst other things, the region is perhaps best known for Mariazell Basilica (ca. 7 km from the Lurgbauer), while the countryside itself is a precious paradise for active holidaymakers. There is nothing to hold you back from glorious hiking and mountaineering expeditions, or from variety-packed cycling and mountain biking tours. In winter, on the other hand, the magical atmosphere of Advent at Mariazell is certain to put you in the perfect romantic frame of mind for the Christmas festivities ahead. If you are still in the mood to get out in nature, you will discover a number of idyllic winter hiking paths and cross-country ski routes, as you will two small ski areas, Gemeindealpe Mitterbach and Bürgeralpe Mariazell.
