The historically listed Mesnerhaus, which stands in the heart of downtown Mauterndorf in Salzburg‘s Lungau region, is an inspiring location for a full spectrum of enjoyment. Behind thick stone walls dating back to the 15th century, congenial hosts Maria and Josef Steffner have created a fascinating refuge with a comfortable atmosphere during the more than seven years they have run this business. Nonetheless, amid the old wooden beams diners discover a very modern spirit, ranging from the stylish décor of the guest rooms on the first floor to the captivating cuisine created at the hand of a chef with a truly sensitive touch.

Sommelier: Maria Steffner
Through his menu concept, Josef Steffner conveys the same love-for-life and joy that comes from good flavour that also drives him to exceptional achievements. As regional as the product selection for his menus named “Joie de vivre” and “Great Temptation” may be, there is essentially no limit to his extraordinary creations that represent such perfection in execution and form: striking, such as his Lungau potato with Salzburg caviar and egg yolk, or soaring like his confited Arctic char with tomato and elderberry, imaginative plays of aroma, new variations between tradition and trend, fascinating desserts.
Maria Steffner is a convincing host, her wine recommendations a harmonious complement to the brilliant achievements in the kitchen. Wine from Austria in all of its diversity assumes a prominent position on the wine list, with a number of new discoveries possible alongside more renowned names. Select bottles from France, above all Champagne, add to this very personal selection.
In the assortment of digestifs, only the best is to be found, from fine spirits made by regional distillers to whiskey – also from Austria – and rum. Weinviertel fruit juices, gentian syrup from Mauterndorf and exquisite teas add the finishing touches.
The delicatessen on the ground floor offers homemade gourmet items such as herbal salt, bacon and sausage made from wild game, along with local specialities including products from Tauern rye and dried herbs. Add to all of this some of those ingredients that make Josef Steffner’s creations so expressive, along with a number of bottled wines.
