The Sonnhof stands high above the valley on a sunny plateau in the Pongau district. It has been a family business since it was founded back in 1929. Today, it is run with a deep sense of hospitality by Vitus Winkler and his life companion, Eva-Maria Gumpenberger.
The beautiful, dark-panelled dining room still originates from his great-grandmother‘s era; the antlers on the wall attest to the passion for hunting within the Winkler family. The small dining room, in bright tones and with its panoramic windows, allows guests to enjoy views of Pongau’s mountain world. The newly designed bar provides an appealing atmospheric counterpoint.

Sommelier: Vitus Winkler
True to his motto “Naturally Magical Enjoyment”, Vitus Winkler presents compelling cuisine which draws its themes from the seasons and the Alpine setting. In his creations, he sculpts landscapes from ideas and products; his presentation of butter is just one such example.
To a great extent the ingredients are supplied by local producers and farmers, while wild game from hunting grounds in the Pongau also plays an important role. This young chef is distinguished by his precision of aromas and strength of composition, as well as by his desserts – and not without a small portion of playfulness: his olive candyfloss, for example, is an absolute must.
Vitus Winkler is not only the head chef, he is also a certified sommelier. His preference is for Austrian wines, whose full breadth in terms of grape varieties, vineyards and different styles is well represented in his very personally compiled wine list. Here, diners encounter much that they recognize, but also much just waiting to be discovered; organic wines are clearly listed. Also when it comes to digestifs, Winkler demonstrates his regional commitment, his fine spirits supplied by distillers in Hallein and St. Veit.
Alcohol-free alternatives include lemongrass-ginger lemonade and homemade herbal syrup made from melissa, verbena or mint.
The roots of the Sonnhof go back to 1929, when the great-grandmother of Vitus Winkler founded the business; she also gave it its name. Over the decades, the Sonnhof grew into a family-run hotel offering 21 comfortable and spacious rooms with all the contemporary comforts guests could wish for. Particularly attractive: the Garden Suite.
From the bright wellness area and even the sauna, you are able to enjoy views of the surrounding mountain world. The large, sunny garden is a marvellous refuge of reflection and relaxation.
The hotel offers a number of packages that include Cherry-Blossom Week, winter hiking and cross-country skiing, as well as exquisite wining & dining experiences.
House guests at the Sonnhof eat every bit as well as à-la-carte diners, though with choices that tend to be more regional in character. Despite the relatively high elevation, some 50 different herbs grow in their own garden; Vitus Winkler also acquires many wild herbs from the surrounding area.
A source of particular pride and joy is his small Rösler vineyard; the first vines were received as a gift upon earning his sommelier diploma. The still-small harvest is used to produce fruit spreads. Jams are a big hobby of the chef, with at least 8 different kinds to be found on the breakfast buffet every day; they are also available to purchase and enjoy at home. Sunday Brunch, which can also be booked by non-resident guests, is an especially delectable treat.
Regular cooking courses; cookbook “Der Essensmacher”.
St. Veit is a spa town, located on a plateau high above the valley. No wonder, then, that the community actually boasts the most hours of sunlight in all of Salzburger Land. With such healthy mountain air, hiking paths and oases of total peace & relaxation, it is hardly any wonder that visitors from far and wide travel here in search of much-needed rest and regeneration.
Ernst Winkler, ex professional skier and senior owner, offers guests of the Sonnhof hikes and mountain-bike tours he guides personally. The winter program includes snowshoe hikes and ski safaris. No one knows the local mountains better than he.
