Weingut Horst Sauer: fine Franconian wine

Horst Sauer
Owner Horst Sauer is a wine technician who started the winery in 1977. Since then, his farm has grown from 1.4 hectares to 20 hectares. According to him, wine is created in the mind, on a framework of tradition and innovation, accompanied with consistent attention. While the winegrower contributes his wine knowledge and imagination, nature sets the tone for oenology, marketing and export. His motto is: “Wine must not be too complicated – if the eyes of the person who tastes our wines light up, we have done everything right.”

"We are happy to be part of the JRE network. This is a very active network where people can have fun and make exciting new connections."

The Franconian region
The Horst Sauer family is constantly searching for the perfect wine with their winery. They embark on a path that may never end, but do so with passion, creativity, and above all, uncompromising quality awareness in the vineyard and cellar. They cultivate their wines on their first-class Escherndorfer Lump steep site and on the Fürstenberg hillside, which offer ideal conditions for fresh, athletic wines. For them, wine means happiness, poetry and enjoyment.

Silvaner, Riesling & Müller-Thurgau
When you are a winemaker, you live by the seasons and are cognizant that you only have a limited number of years to create a wine that meets your own requirements. Every mistake is an opportunity to do better next time and, if you look closely, can prevent you from committing it a second time. With the growth of the vines, the ripening of the grapes, the harvest in autumn, and the care in the cellar, each stage opens up an incredibly large possibility of changes to be able to present the wines in the best light. However, less often is more in this case. When the concept and the idea for a wine arise in spring, it means observing and reacting, directing and supporting in order to create a wine for the imagined moments of pleasure and then, maybe a year later, to be able to pour it into the glass. Wine grows in the vineyard, not in the cellar.

Escherndorf
Escherndorf is spoiled. From the sun, the climate, to the soil and the mountain. This unique terroir gives the wines their quality. Lump and Fürstenberg are part of Franconia's cultural heritage. Vineyards that are not expandable or replaceable and that give our wines their character. Each plot has its uniqueness. The Fürstenberg has the morning sun. The Lump, on the other hand, collects the sun's rays all day long like parabolic mirrors – our first layers. Our excellent large vineyard lies in the center of "Escherndorf am Lumpen" – a steep southern slope with over 30-year-old vines.
