On one of Austria’s sunny valley plateaus lies hotel and gourmet restaurant Sonnhof. This family-run establishment in the Pongau district was founded in 1929. Today, it is run by multi-award-winning chef Vitus Winkler and his wife Eva-Maria Gumpenberger. Vitus’ contemporary creations earned him 4 toques, 4 hoods from Gault Millau, and 4 stars from À La Carte. In the restaurant you’ll find a beautiful, dark-paneled dining room that dates from chef Vitus’ great-grandmother‘s era. The antlers on the wall have also been able to withstand the test of time and showcase the Winkler family’s passion for hunting. Sonnhof restaurant features a modern bar, as well as a small and bright dining room with panoramic windows that offer you a gorgeous view of Pongau’s mountains.

Much like the wine selection, the dishes are mainly made with ingredients from local producers and farmers. Such as wild game from Pontau’s hunting grounds. Chef Vitus Winkler’s cooking style is very much defined by his precise aromas and strong compositions. His playful desserts however, are also an absolute must-try. If you have a sweet tooth, Winkler’s olive candyfloss will surely make your heart beat a little faster. On the wine list you’ll find recognizable brands, as well as a few surprising options. Expect an array of organic wines and digestifs, including fine spirits from local distillers in Hallein and St. Veit. But also exciting alcohol-free options like lemongrass-ginger lemonade and homemade herbal syrup made from melissa, verbena, or mint.

Hotel and gourmet restaurant Sonnhof is situated in St. Veit im Pongau, on a sunny plateau above the valley. Here, you’ll be sure to get the greatest amount of sunlight that Salzburger Land offers. As a spa town, St. Veit has a lot to offer if you’re looking for some much-needed space, peace and relaxation. It’s no wonder that the town attracts visitors from near and far, searching to escape hectic everyday life. Surrounded by the clean mountain air, this is the perfect place to explore one of the many hiking paths. You can embark on guided hiking or mountain-biking tours, organized by ex-professional skier Ernst Winkler (Sonnenhof’s senior owner). Knowing the local mountains like no other, Ernst also offers snowshoe hikes and ski safaris during winter. For shopping local delicacies, we recommend Pongau Farm Shop in Schwarzach.

Hotel Sonnhof’s roots date back to 1929. Chef Vitus Winkler’s great-grandmother founded and named the inn. Today, the family-run hotel offers 21 comfortable and spacious rooms, including an exclusive Garden Suite.   You can marvel at the mountain scenery from almost every room, even if you’re relaxing in the wellness area or the sauna. In summer, Sonnhof’s large and sunny garden also provides you with a wonderful space to relax and reflect.   Good to know: the hotel offers various special packages, including Cherry Blossom Week, as well as excellent wining and dining events.
