Born in Austria, Michael Quendler starts off his career with an apprenticeship in a restaurant in Graz before approaching star chef Johann Lafer at a trade fair in Munich. He applies for a job and gets it. This is where he meets his wife Birgitta. This defining period is followed by eight years on Sylt. Together, they then go to Gummersbach, where they turn the Gutshaus Mühlenhelle into a nationally known culinary institution.
Sommelier: Birgitta Quendler
Together with his team, Michael Quendler cooks fresh, modern and on a classical basis. Their dishes are harmonious, with the emphasis on the product's original flavour. High-quality, regional vegetables, fruits, meat and fish serve as the basis. Each month, they create three new multi-course menus, one of which is always vegan. The dishes on the menu can also be ordered à la carte. The team is well-coordinated and the service is pleasantly casual and professional. The sommelier has a special preference for German and Austrian wines, and she is more than happy to advise guests on all things wine. Together with a friend, they run the northernmost vineyard in Germany on Sylt.
This is where the largest number of people in Germany live. NRW has long been dominated by coal and steel and is today one of the economically strongest regions in Germany. Many first associate Altbier and Kölsch, Karneval and Ruhrpott with the state - but the Bay of Cologne and the Soester Börde, the Rhine and the Eifel, the Bergisches, Sauer and Münsterland have much more to offer vacationers. Cologne is a city of music, art and media. Düsseldorf stands for fashion. The university city of Münster, with its Aasee and Promenade, was crowned "The World's Most Liveable City" in 2004. The small and pretty Detmold in the province of Lippe with the Hermannsdenkmal monument and Externsteine. Aachen with its cathedral. The city of silk and velvet: Krefeld. All popular destinations for excursions. In winter, NRW skiers make the pilgrimage to Winterberg in the Sauerland. In summer, people sail up and down the Rhine. The theatre landscape in the Ruhr area - in Bochum, Essen, Duisburg and Gelsenkirchen - is particularly varied. The Ruhrtriennale, one of the cultural highlights of the region, is known far beyond the borders of the region.
