Run by sister-and-brother team Sonja and Richard Rauch, the Steira Wirt in Trautmannsdorf has developed into one of the finest culinary addresses, not just in Styria, but throughout all of Austria. That said, this wonderful ensemble of an inn, top-flight restaurant and family-owned butcher’s never lost touch with its local roots.
That said, amid the ambience of endearing charm that pervades the dining room and separate lounges, modern culinary artistry is takes centre stage, an exciting interplay between tradition and international culinary sophistication. In summer, the vine-flanked panorama terrace is a truly splendid place.

Sommelier: Sonja Rauch
As the recipient of “Austria’s Chef of the Year 2015” from Gault Millau, Richard Rauch has attained the highlight of his career to-date. Nonetheless, this chef with a delicate touch has managed to keep his feet planted firmly on the ground provided by the Styrian inn-keeping tradition.
Culinarily well-travelled, his refined creations in a combination of seemingly unassuming local ingredients with exotic aromas are quite astonishing. Instead of a standard menu, diners discover a list of ingredients, which always include special types of vegetable, crayfish as well as free-range Johann pork.
Given a place of honour on the inn menu is offal. A true rarity for gourmet diners: the Offal Surprise Menu.
Sonja Rauch is the embodiment of a perfect host, also a thoroughly versed connoisseur of the Austrian as well as international wine scene. Styrian wine, of course, enjoys a special status as a meal accompaniment, while the individually compiled wine list appeals to practically every palate. The Rosalie sparkling wine actually originates from the grapes grown on their own terraces!
However, and very much in the spirit of the times, the Steira Wirt also features excellent alcohol-free alternatives: Homemade vegetable juices and freshly pressed fruit juices in inspiring combinations, home-fermented Kombucha or a milk to accompany dessert reveal whole new dimensions.
The small in-house grocery store (since spring 2015) offers the best products made at the Steira Wirt: exquisite sausage and renowned Johann ham from the family butcher’s, homemade stocks, jams, pumpkinseed lard, Rosalie sparkling wine, vermouth, egg liqueur as well as a line of pumpkinseed oils from Ölmühle Fandler. Plates from the Steira Wirt’s out-of-the-ordinary crockery selection are also available here for purchase.
With a large vegetable garden, Richard Rauch always has his very personal selection of rare ingredients fresh and close at hand: including tigernut, yacón, tomatillos and white strawberries.
Regular culinary events featuring guest chefs and vintners.
Trautmannsdorf lies in the wine-growing area of South-Eastern Styria, located in the heart of the Vulkanland region with its gentle hills and hot springs, just a few kilometres from the spa town of Bad Gleichenberg.
Excursions take guests to Riegersburg, Schloss Kornberg or Schloss Kapfenstein as well as to the marvellous wine-growing regions and towns in the area, including Straden, the Köcher Wine Road and, not at all far away, Southern Styria.
Highlights for gourmets: A visit to Richard Rauch’s suppliers and top producers, such as Ölmühle Fandler in Pöllau, Gernot Heigl’s crayfish farm in Stegersbach, and Fromagerie Riegersburg. www.fandler.at, www.fischundkrebs.at, www.thecheeseartist.at
In cooperation with local guest houses, the Steira Wirt is happy to organise accommodations in Bad Gleichenberg as well as shuttle service.
To dine at a JRE restaurant is to enjoy a seamless, perfectly executed experience. However, behind the scenes, a team of professionals work tirelessly to ensure only the highest of standards.
