At an early age, chef Jan Marrees knew he wanted to become a chef. Having been rejected from hotel school, he decided to attend chef school in Eindhoven. Being an ambitious young chef, he applied to restaurants all over Limburg. He was eventually accepted by chef Paul van de Bunt at Restaurant De Leuf, where he was trained in classic French culinary basics. After his time at De Leuf, Jan Marrees gained experience of chef Ida van den Hur at star restaurant Lindenhorst, chef Jan Waghemans at D'r Bloasbalg, and Cas Spijkers at De Swaen. Next, Jan is hired as chef at restaurant Bretelli. He took over the business in 2010 and became SVH-certified Master Chef in 2012. Together with his wife Patricia, he put restaurant Bretelli on the map and Michelin awarded them with a star. In 2018, Jan and Patricia started their own restaurant: Marrees. A dream dining establishment they proudly realized.
